<p>The days of dismissing the practice of blogging as the hobby of computer geeks or teenagers is truly over.  When looking for information, more and more people are turning exclusively to the Internet to find what they need. The reason of course is simply the ease and convenience of performing an information search and the portable nature of the tools they can use.</p>
<p>In this generation of handheld devices, a potential customer can search the Internet for a business need, check several blogs for the necessary facts and make a decision on which to choose from, all while waiting in the car to pick up their dry cleaning.  It is becoming critical to a business to use a blog to market itself.<span id="more-144"></span></p>
<p><strong>The advantage of blogging </strong></p>
<p>One of the many great advantages to using blogs is they do not have to be expensive and in fact, starting your online presence can be completely free. There are many places on the Internet where a business owner or acting representative can open an account at no charge and use existing blog models to very easily create a company’s blog.  This procedure is menu driven and takes very little computer ‘expertise’ to accomplish.</p>
<p>Once setup is complete and a name given to the blog that will put the company before the internet public, then interest generating topics can be posted that will attract attention and drive visitors to the company’s main site.</p>
<p><strong>What are the goals behind choosing topics? </strong></p>
<p>The topics of the blog should have two main goals, which are to provide information to the visitor about topics related to the business, and to provide information about the business itself.  Getting this content out to the public this way, works very well especially for the small business because ordinarily this type of opportunity would be priced well out of their budgeting range.  A newspaper or magazine ad taking up this amount of space, or a radio advertising spot reaching as many people would be affordable to only the very few and usually not for as a sustainable amount of time as a blog can accommodate.</p>
<p>It is important to remember when creating a blog to promote a business that while this is a marketing opportunity, the blog itself should have a less direct style than would be seen with most advertising venues.  The key is to give the public the value of information by coming to your blog.  Just as a customer might call a business for general information about services or a product, the blog serves as a tool to allow good relationships with the public to develop.</p>
<p><strong>Drawing visitors </strong></p>
<p>Naturally part of the desire behind a blog is to draw as many visitors as possible, so the company’s blogger would need to become familiar with certain aspects of Internet traffic such as social media, Google analytics, and such concepts as keywords in order to better compete.</p>
<p>Once up and working a blog is well worth this investment of time and effort.</p>
