If you're not into it yet, shopping carts are online applications that are quite a necessity nowadays and have become a crucial component to the success of your business. For small and just starting out businesses, a well thought of shopping cart can even bring about a break or make situation for them. This is why decisions on a shopping a cart should not be rushed. You should spend time thinking about what you want rather than thinking about how to resolve as situation later on.

When you are in the process of selecting a shopping cart application, it would be best to list down your specific needs from a shopping cart. You might not actually need all those additional features in the first place and purchasing them could be just a waste of your money.

However, do not limit yourself to the point that you will not avail of additional features ever. There will come a time that you will need some features to keep your shopping cart updated and at the level of your competitors. With this in mind, it would be best to keep options open and look for a shopping cart that offers future upgrades.

Because of the development of the shopping cart technology, you can choose from the simplest form to the more complex ones that have integrated webpages instead of just being an element of your online store. Again, it is a matter of knowing what you want. You can narrow down everything once you've organized your needs and expectations from the cart.

There are some very useful features nowadays that you should seriously consider. There's the option of the cart coming up with suggestions of other products that complements the current selection your client has at the moment. This idea appeals to the impulse buying behavior of individuals. The feature can be quite effective in generating sales and should not be totally ignored.

Another consideration, of course, is your budget. It is a very easy decision to select between a simple cart and one that is jam-packed with features if you know your budget. Things will be dictated by your budget, that maybe harsh but that's a reality that you will have to face.

It is okay to spend some money on a shopping cart but do not forget the other elements that will help make your online store successful. There's the payment gateway, additional manpower to maintain the shopping cart, hosting issues, and other stuff.

The point is to see this ecommerce shopping cart as a whole and not just in segments. You can invest properly by thinking that way. It will also help you to keep to your budget by factoring early on the costs of each component of your online store.

When I was doing my yearly planning for 2010, I listed the five marketing strategies that I intend to carry out. Number one on that list…Article marketing.

In case you're not familiar with article marketing yet, it involves writing informative and useful articles and distributing them to article directories – giving permission to anyone to republish your article as long as your author resource box is left intact.

Why you should consider article marketing:

	Free traffic to your site

High authority article directories, like Ezine Articles, enjoy a lot of traffic (we're talking millions of eyeballs every month). Many of those who read their articles invariably click on the links in the author resource box and end up going to those sites. This is free traffic that otherwise they would not have been able to attract to their site!

Increased rankings in Google and other search engines

Search engine optimization (SEO) experts say that one of the most important ways to get high Google rankings for your target keywords is to have lots of links from other sites pointing to yours. The key is the anchor text of those links should be the keywords you'd like to rank high for.

This strategy works so well that a Internet marketer once succeeded in having his website rank number one in Google for the keywords "coolest guy on earth" (or something like that!) – just by having all his buddies link to his site with that anchor text. That's how powerful linking is.

These are the same links you get from the usually high-authority article directories all linking back to your website through the author resource box.

	Affiliate sales

Some article directories allow you to link, not just to your website, but to an affiliate product's sales page with your affiliate links. This means that your article gets blasted all over the Internet, thus increasing the chances of somebody clicking on your affiliate links and buying the product. The result? More affiliate commissions for you.

This concept is the essence of the so-called "bum marketing" or lazy marketing, which doesn't even require you to have a website. All you need to do is write and submit articles to article directories and you make affiliate commissions from those articles for as long as they're online. We're talking years here.

Another benefit of article marketing is that you become a published author and, therefore, an expert on the topic. In fact, a friend of mine got interviewed on national TV because the reporter read one of her articles online. That's media publicity that would have cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars! (Unfortunately, I have not had that opportunity – yet)

Have you ever bought something on the recommendation of another? This word-of-mouth technique works online as well. Here, it is called viral marketing. Get your own viral campaigns moving by offering free reports.

The reports we are talking about are special reports. They are usually around five to ten pages in length. In them, readers will find a wealth of information on a topic of interest. For you, the topic has something to do with your business niche.

Viral advertising only works when the product that you offer has mass appeal. This means that people will want to share it with others once they see it. It can be a unique twist on an old subject, something funny or something interactive. With reports, they can present a new twist, make someone laugh and provoke thoughtful discussion.

Hey, where can you find a report like that? You are going to write it. You don’t have to be a great writer to produce a free report worth reading. The best tool that you have is the fact that you know a lot about your niche. Your business is your passion and whatever you write needs to convey that passion. The most interesting reports are those that offer something that the reader doesn’t already know or something that they need.

What do you want to accomplish with the free report? It can be a list of potential clients, a bigger sale or even a sign up for something else free like a trial membership or trying out a new product. Your answer to this question leads to your landing page. This is where you advertise your free report and give reasons why the reader needs to opt-in to receive it.

Your free report will touch off a viral storm but you need to let people know about it. It’s like using promotion to help you interest people in a product that will further promote your website. It sounds complicated but actually isn’t at all.

Are you familiar with article marketing? That’s when you write articles about your niche and submit them to article directories. At the end, you’ll include a link in our bio box that leads to your website business. With the free reports, you’ll write articles about the same subject as the report and link to the landing page so readers who like your article and find the free report.

How about your existing customers? They have already bought products from you and know how great you are. Send them an email with the link to your landing page. Do the same for your friends, associates and, if you have an affiliate program, your affiliates.

People like to get free items, but they also want them to be worth their time. Use interesting free reports to jumpstart a viral marketing campaign and drive traffic to your site.

Promoting your online business almost always depends on others. You use family and friends to get the ball rolling when you are just starting out. If you have some customers, you count on them to pass the word. Cross promotion helps you do the same thing but with other businesses.

What is cross promotion? In a nutshell, it is working with other businesses both large and small to draw attention to your products. Cross promotion is different from affiliate marketing in that it is an agreement that is mutually beneficial to both people in the same way. With affiliate marketing, the affiliate gets a percentage of the pie based on an agreed upon amount. With cross promotion, both partners are looking to receive the same amount of compensation.

With that said, cross promotions can begin with your business associates within your niche. No doubt, you have found some kindred business souls on niche forums and social networking sites. Niche associations are another great place to find businesses that operate within your chosen business niche.

The key here is to find someone who is not in direct completion which is much like affiliate marketing. They already have their finger on the pulse of the niche so any leads or sales you get through their promotion are targeted. They have shopped with your partner and are also likely to buy from you.

	Why Cross Promote?

The easy answer here is that you want to increase your sales. That is the goal of business after all. You would be doing less than your absolute best if you didn’t pull every rabbit out of your magic marketing hat to help your business perform even better.

Another reason is to increase your visibility among your business peers. When you partner with a bigger more well known business, you increase your credibility. After all, those large companies wouldn’t waste their time with someone who couldn’t bring something valuable to the table.

	Types of Cross Promotion

So what does cross promotion look like? Well, you can post advertisement links on each other’s sites. This gives customers a chance to check you out. When businesses are compatible this is more likely to be rewarding. For instance, if you sell party supplies, partnering with a party planner makes good business sense.

Write website content and blog for each other. This gives your customers and their customers a chance to see and hear from the person they are talking about. Allow links within the text and a bio with links for your partner so the visitors can click on it for more information.

Cross promotion between similar businesses are both a way to network with new business people and also a way to increase profits for both of you.

To be successful online in business or even just for fun, you need to get noticed. No one will read or buy from you if they can’t find you right? But, how do you get yourself out there so people CAN find you? That is where search engine optimization, more commonly known as SEO, comes into play.

SEO What?

Search engine optimization, or SEO for short, is a series of tools, or thought processes and tasks completed on your web pages, that help your website or blog to get noticed by the search engines. Search engines use clever things called bots and spiders to crawl sites for anything that makes them relevant to search parameters entered by Internet visitors.

Most people either don’t know what they are looking for or they don’t know where to find it on the Internet. They rely on the search engines to do the work for them. The words that visitors use in the search boxes are termed “keywords” by Internet marketers. When you use the same words in various places on your site, search engines will rank your web pages in relation to others using the same keywords. The one’s who use research and optimization techniques the best, will end up on top of the list. Why does being at the top of search engines matter?

Research has found that 60% of all web searchers will click on one of the top 3 sites they are presented with. The majority of those will choose the number 1 ranked spot. Having one of the top three positions, therefore, can results in a much greater amount of traffic. It's not just the amount of traffic that's important to note, though. After the 3rd spot, the response from search engine users diminishes greatly. This means that the visitors that you get from position 4 and below are less likely to become paying customers.

How to Use It

So, how exactly do you get to the top spots in the search engines? There are several tools and resources that can help with creating top notch SEO for your websites. They revolve around keywords and keyword phrases but the problem is what words to use for your particular business niche.

Think like a customer. After all, you own a business but at times you are also a customer. If it were you, what words would you enter to find the information that your potential customers are trying to find? This will be a short list but one that you can start with.

From there, use some online keyword software to get more ideas. There are programs like Overture that can take one keyword and return a hundred more for you to look at using in your content and elsewhere on your website. Many marketers also use WordTracker’s Free Keyword Tool to help them determine which keywords are hot. www.freekeywords.wordtracker.com These keyword programs get their results from various search engines so you can be assured that your keywords represent current parameters.

Search engine optimization is useful for content but that is not the only place. Use keywords to get ranked through other places on your site and other sites too. Here are just a few:

Headlines (for each web page and article)

Anchor text (for links within articles and elsewhere on the page)

Picture tags

Tabs (pulldown menus)

Search engine optimization helps you to create a relevant website for the search engines. After you take the time to set up your website with all the information customers will want to see when they visit, use your keywords. This gives the search engines what they need to rank you well so that those customers can find your products or services when it’s most important – when it’s time to buy!

LinkedIn is a social networking site that can allow users to interact socially with their customers on a more personal level. Social networking in general and LinkedIn in particular are wonderful forums for business owners to increase sales. Here are some reasons why learning how to use LinkedIn for your business can be important for your sales.

Getting to Know You…

Businesses, over the past few decades, have changed their ways of selling to the customer. Businesses in the past were always concerned about customer services. During the previous generation, the saying was “The customer is always right,” and business owners lived by it. Somewhere in the process, we have lost that sense of customer service and have turned a hard edge toward marketing, advertising, and profit. It seems there are not many businesses left that truly care for their customers any more.

This is why learning how to use LinkedIn for your business can be a wonderful idea. Social networking sites allow business owners and customers to interact on a much more personal level, especially for businesses that are primarily run online. Customers can ask questions, and are rewarded with not only the answers to their questions, but any other information that business owners want to volunteer about themselves and their business.

Familiarity Breeds Loyalty

The tradeoff for business owners who choose to get to know their customers very well is that they can create loyalty among their customers. Everyone wants to get a good deal, but customers also want to know that they are purchasing from a person who is dedicated, interested, and morally grounded. The best way for customers to ascertain this information is to get to know their business proprietors better. The more information a merchant is willing to offer, the better a customer can get to know him or her. The better a customer gets to know the merchant the more loyal they are likely to be. Learning how to use LinkedIn for your business can make more and more loyal customers, every day.

Loyalty and Sales

This shared information and customer loyalty can translate to increases in sales. The more loyal a customer is to you, the more loyal they will be to your business. If a customer truly likes you, they will think of you and your business first, when they need the products or services you are selling. The more loyal customers you have, the more sales you will ultimately make, because you will have more repeat sales than you had previously.

In addition, when you learn how to use LinkedIn for your business needs, new customers will also be able to find information quickly and easily on your LinkedIn site, making them more likely to buy from you rather than your competitor. The best part is your sales do not go below previous levels, so you have much to gain by learning how to use LinkedIn for your business!

If you are running an email marketing campaign, you will find that often plain text is not enough. Customers pay very little attention to printed words on a page, but if you can incorporate images into your campaign, you will find that you get a much better response. Videos produce better results that simple images. This article can show you how to use video in email marketing campaigns in a variety of different ways.

Add videos as an attachment

The easiest way to learn how to use video in an email marketing campaign is to send videos as an attachment. Most email hosts simply have a button at the top of the page that says “add attachment,” or something similar, and this is the easiest way to add a video to an email. This is the obvious advantage to this method, but there is also a down side to this method. If you add video in an attachment, you run the risk of your contact deleting the message without downloading the video.

Many viruses are transmitted to computers as attachments in emails and email marketing campaigns are often sent to contacts that will not immediately recognize your email address. Anyone interested in protecting their computer’s hard drive would likely not read and delete an unsolicited email and never look back if it had an attachment with it.

Add links to an off-site account

Sites such as www.photbucket.com, www.myspace.com, and www.facebook.com offer free hosting of videos and a unique web address for your uploads, so that you can simply add a link in your email which sends readers to the account. Also, www.youtube.com hosts free videos by others that can be linked. This is a great and relatively easy option for those still learning how to use video in email marketing campaigns. You can choose to make the pages private and include a password, so that only those contacted can view the page, or you can make it public with the intent that you can attract more business when others happen to view your videos.

The downside to this approach is that many readers may not take the time to follow your link. The average email reader has several windows open at once, and Internet users in general tend to multitask while reading email. If your message requires too much “work,” you will likely not get much of a response.

Embed Images and videos with HTML

For the advanced Internet user who already understands how to use video in email marketing campaigns, the most effective way to add video to an email message is simply to embed the video into the message itself. Embedded videos can be programmed to begin automatically as soon as the message is opened, or they can be programmed to wait until readers click a play button, so that text can be added above the video.
